A man has died after a shooting involving an FBI agent on Chicago's Near West Side on Monday.
The shooting happened in the 1700 block of South Union Avenue in the Pilsen neighborhood, underneath the Dan Ryan Expressway, during the Monday evening rush.
The shooting led to a massive law enforcement response Monday evening. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots — some were shocked at the quick law enforcement response.
Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th) said the shooting caused a lot of concern, as there are families with children who live in the area.
"From what I gather from the neighbors is that there was approximately 9 to 10 shots," he said.
The FBI on Tuesday evening said the agent was on his way home in a Bureau-issued car when he spotted the man firing at least two shots into a group of innocent people. They said the agent, in an attempt to stop the ongoing threat, engaged with the man, who was then shot.
Video obtained by CBS News Chicago shows the FBI agent with his gun drawn at the man who was on the ground near an e-bike. Other law enforcement then arrived to help the man, as the agent holstered his gun.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as 27-year-old Oscar D. Isaya-Corrales. The FBI says he was in the U.S. from Venezuela Illegally.
An autopsy determined he died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Law enforcement was back at the scene on Tuesday for further investigation — taping off the area where the shooting occurred, closing the 18th Street exit on the Dan Ryan for a few hours. Agents were seen using equipment, including metal detectors, during the investigation.
Singcho-Lopez is calling on the Illinois Attorney General and Cook County State's Attorney to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. He is also asking for CPD to preserve all evidence, including body camera footage and witness statements, for investigators.
"We still don't know what led an FBI agent to fatally shoot a young man in Pilsen on Monday, but one thing is certain: the FBI and its own Inspection Division cannot, under any circumstances, conduct a thorough, credible investigation of itself," he said.
The agency said that no FBI personnel or other people were hurt.
The shooting is being reviewed by the FBI's Inspection Division.
